Senegal’s Abdoulaye Niakhaté makes surprise Parma return after five-month absence
A Senegalese defender made an unexpected return to action in Serie A on Saturday, ending a five-month absence after a late change to Parma’s starting line-up.
The development came during Parma’s 33rd-round clash with Udinese, when a last-minute injury to teammate Lautaro Valenti forced the coaching staff to revise their plans shortly before kick-off.
The Senegal international, who had originally been named among the substitutes, was immediately drafted into the starting eleven by coach Carlos Cuesta.
The defender, who joined Parma from ESTAC Troyes during the previous summer transfer window for €6.5 million, had been waiting for an opportunity to return after a prolonged spell on the sidelines.
His inclusion marked a significant moment following months of recovery.
Earlier in the season, he had featured regularly, making seven league appearances as well as one outing in the Coppa Italia.
However, his campaign was interrupted by pubalgia, an injury that kept him out of competitive action between November 2025 and February 2026. The absence disrupted his momentum and delayed his integration into the squad following his arrival in Italy.
He returned to the matchday squad at the beginning of March, first being named among the substitutes for Parma’s goalless draw against Fiorentina.
Despite being included in subsequent squads, he remained on the bench for four consecutive matches, awaiting an opportunity to step back onto the pitch.
That opportunity finally arrived under unexpected circumstances against Udinese, bringing an end to a difficult period marked by injury and limited involvement.
His return not only provided a solution to Parma’s immediate selection problem but also represented a key step in his recovery and reintegration into competitive football.
With the season entering its decisive phase, the defender’s availability could offer Parma additional options as they navigate the closing fixtures.
His comeback highlights both the unpredictability of matchday decisions and the resilience required to return from a long-term injury setback.
