AS Saint-Étienne have welcomed 18-year-old Senegalese centre-back Papa Mamadou Diouf on trial as the club explores options to strengthen its reserve squad ahead of the new season.
Currently contracted to Niarry-Tally Grand-Dakar Biscuiterie (NGB), Diouf has been invited to train and play with Saint-Étienne’s reserve side during a trial period.
The move comes as the club assesses reinforcements for its defensive line following a string of departures in recent weeks.
The young defender, who represented Senegal at the 2024 African Games in Accra, featured in a recent friendly match for Saint-Étienne’s reserves against AJ Auxerre’s B team.
Starting the match in central defence, Diouf delivered a composed and confident performance across the 90 minutes. His impact grew steadily throughout the game, helping the Saint-Étienne side secure a 4–1 victory.
Saint-Étienne’s interest in Diouf is partly driven by gaps in the reserve squad’s back line. The departures of Fodé Camara to Olympique de Marseille and Lamine Ndiaye to Portuguese outfit Alverca have left the coaching staff with limited options in central defence. Diouf’s arrival on trial is viewed as a timely opportunity to address this shortage.
The club’s technical team is understood to be particularly impressed with Diouf’s reading of the game, physicality, and ability to build play from the back.
His age and international experience with Senegal’s U20 side add to his appeal, aligning with Saint-Étienne’s long-standing commitment to developing young talent.
Although no decision has been made regarding a permanent contract, Diouf’s performances in training and friendly fixtures will be closely evaluated in the coming days.
Should he continue to impress, the club could formalise its interest with a contract offer before the end of the current window.
The trial marks Diouf’s first potential move into European football. At just 18, he has already attracted attention for his performances in the Senegalese domestic league and on the international youth stage.
His progression through the ranks at NGB has earned praise, with coaches describing him as a player with maturity beyond his years.
For AS Saint-Étienne, the potential signing represents a low-risk, high-upside opportunity. Known for its rich history of nurturing young African players, the club sees Diouf as a possible long-term asset who could grow into a first-team role with time.
Saint-Étienne’s reserve team, which plays a vital role in the club’s talent pipeline, is expected to remain a key focus for recruitment this summer as the Ligue 2 side looks to strengthen across all levels of the organisation.
A final decision on Papa Mamadou Diouf’s future at the club is expected shortly after the conclusion of his trial period. For the young Senegalese defender, the coming days may prove pivotal in his journey toward a professional career in European football.
