Senegalese defender Nobel Mendy set for Rayo Vallecano switch after failed PSV move
Nobel Mendy is reportedly on the verge of joining Rayo Vallecano after his planned move to Dutch giants PSV Eindhoven collapsed due to administrative complications.
The 20-year-old Senegalese defender, currently with Real Betis, had reached a full agreement with both PSV and his parent club.
However, the transfer fell through after delays in securing a work permit prevented the move from being finalised.
PSV, having grown increasingly frustrated with the process, opted to withdraw from the deal, leaving Mendy’s future uncertain—until now.
According to reports from Radio Marca, Rayo Vallecano are close to securing Mendy’s services in a deal that would see them acquire 50% of the player’s rights for around €2 million.
The young centre-back has reportedly already reached a personal agreement with the Madrid-based side, which includes a five-year contract.
Mendy, a former Paris FC player, had been earmarked for a switch to the Eredivisie as early as May, with a €4.2 million transfer fee and a 20% resale clause previously agreed upon between Real Betis and PSV. However, bureaucratic obstacles ultimately forced the Dutch side to abandon the deal.
Excluded from Manuel Pellegrini’s first-team plans at Real Betis, Mendy has been seeking a fresh start. Rayo Vallecano’s interest appears to offer the perfect opportunity for the young defender to continue his development while staying in La Liga.
The club, which has recently been active in the transfer market, is also working hard to retain another Senegalese talent, midfielder Pathé Ciss, who has attracted interest from Celta Vigo, as well as clubs in England and Saudi Arabia.
Rayo’s potential capture of Mendy would represent a strategic addition to their defensive ranks and continue their trend of investing in emerging African talent.
The move also allows Mendy to avoid the uncertainties of adjusting to a new league and country, giving him a familiar platform to rebuild momentum in his career.
Despite the failed PSV transfer, the Senegalese youngster remains a highly regarded prospect. His technical ability, defensive awareness, and potential for growth have drawn interest across Europe.
At 20, Mendy still has plenty of time to make his mark, and Rayo Vallecano could be the environment in which he thrives.
The final agreement between Rayo and Real Betis is reportedly in its last stages, and an official announcement is expected soon.
Once confirmed, the move would end a transfer saga that began with high hopes in the Netherlands but now looks set to continue in Spain’s top flight.
