Senegalese defender Ilay Camara set for Standard Liège exit amid growing transfer interest

Standard Liège are preparing to activate the €1.8 million purchase clause for Ilay Camara following an impressive season-long loan from RWDM, but the Senegalese defender’s stay at Sclessin could be short-lived as multiple clubs line up to secure his signature.

Camara has emerged as one of Standard’s standout performers this season, quickly becoming a key figure in the team’s backline.

His rise has not only caught the attention of Standard’s management but also attracted significant interest from top Belgian sides and clubs across Europe.

Despite the club’s intention to finalise his permanent transfer, Camara may already be on the move again in the coming months.

According to journalist Sacha Tavolieri, Standard are fully committed to exercising the option to buy the 21-year-old, who joined on loan from RWDM at the start of the campaign.

However, with interest mounting, the Liège-based side view Camara as a valuable asset whose sale could significantly bolster their summer transfer budget.

The club is reportedly looking to triple their investment, aiming for a resale price in the region of €5.4 million.

Among the suitors is Club Brugge, who have been monitoring Camara since February, as reported by IPM media.

Their interest is understood to be serious, with Brugge keen to strengthen their defensive options ahead of next season.

French and Italian clubs have also been linked with the young Senegalese international, who earned his first senior national team call-up last March under head coach Pape Thiaw.

Camara’s market value has surged thanks to a string of commanding performances in the Belgian Pro League, where he has combined physicality with composure and tactical intelligence.

His consistency, versatility across the defensive line, and potential for further development have made him one of the most sought-after young players in Belgian football.

Standard’s strategy is clear: complete the permanent signing and then decide whether to keep Camara as a long-term defensive anchor or capitalise on his rising value.

With financial pressures mounting, a quick turnaround sale could provide much-needed relief and allow the club to reinvest ahead of a busy transfer window.

For Camara, the coming weeks will be decisive. Whether he remains with the club that gave him his breakthrough or embarks on a new challenge elsewhere, his trajectory continues to rise.

The interest from major European leagues reflects his growing reputation, and his recent national team call-up has only strengthened his credentials on the international stage.

As the summer transfer window approaches, all eyes will be on Standard’s next move — and on Ilay Camara, whose breakthrough season may soon be rewarded with a high-profile transfer.
