Senegal U20 head coach Serigne Saliou Dia expressed his pride and relief after his side secured a pivotal win over the Democratic Republic of Congo, a result that guarantees the Lionceaux a place in the quarterfinals of the 2025 U20 Africa Cup of Nations.

Speaking during the post-match press conference, Dia praised his players’ resilience and the team’s collective effort in what he described as a high-pressure encounter. “First of all, we must thank God,” he began. “We had no choice but to qualify. Our status simply didn’t permit us to exit the competition at this stage.”

The Senegalese coach acknowledged the mental and emotional challenges his squad had faced leading up to the match, adding that there had been moments of uncertainty surrounding their readiness.

“It was a difficult situation,” he admitted. “There were doubts, yes, but we responded with unity and determination. We talked a lot, reflected together, and worked to rebuild the players’ confidence.”

Dia revealed that a significant amount of effort went into the team’s mental preparation, highlighting the importance of psychological readiness in tournament football.

“We didn’t just focus on physical recovery. Mental strength was key. We did everything necessary to get the players back on track mentally, and I think that’s what made the difference on the pitch.”

Turning to the tactical approach that led to the victory, Dia provided insight into how Senegal adapted to the playing style of the DR Congo side.

“They defend as a compact block,” he said. “But they leave spaces behind, particularly on the flanks. We needed players who could dominate the central areas and then spread the play wide at speed.”

The tactical discipline and adaptability of the Senegalese side were evident as they neutralised DR Congo’s attacks while maintaining control of the match tempo. Dia underlined the significance of these fine margins in tournament football, noting that attention to detail often determines the outcome in such tightly contested fixtures.

“In this kind of match, everything matters — precision, focus, the ability to capitalise on opportunities. We worked hard on those aspects, and I think that’s why we came out on top today,” he explained.

While Dia acknowledged the initial doubts and tension that came with the group stage pressure, he was quick to highlight the importance of self-belief and perseverance.

“There was a moment where I had to reassure myself,” he said. “Now, we’re through. We’re going to enjoy this win, stick to our game plan, and continue on our path.”

With Senegal now advancing to the quarterfinals, the focus shifts to building on the momentum generated from this victory. Dia’s leadership and tactical nous will once again be tested as the Lionceaux prepare for their next challenge on the road to potential continental glory.

As the tournament progresses, Senegal’s performance against DR Congo will be seen as a turning point — a match where the team found its rhythm and a coach reaffirmed his belief in his players’ potential.
