Senegal’s U17 national football team has been formally handed the national flag by Minister of Sports Khady Diène Gaye ahead of their departure for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.

The ceremony, held on Tuesday, marked the beginning of the young squad’s quest to retain the title won in 2023.

A Call to Honor and Triumph

Speaking at the event, Gaye expressed her unwavering belief in the team’s ability to bring home the trophy.

“I am convinced that you will return with the title,” she stated, urging the players to embrace the honor of representing their nation on the continental stage.

“This flag, a symbol of our nation, our values, and our unity, is entrusted to you today. You are the ambassadors of our country, the bearers of our dreams.

I urge you to give your all on the field, to demonstrate fair play, and to embody the ethics of sport,” she added.

Defending Champions Eye Another Triumph

Senegal’s young talents will depart for Jadida, Morocco, on Wednesday, where they will compete in Group C of the tournament.

Their opening match is scheduled against Gambia on April 1.

Present at the ceremony was Senegalese Football Federation President Augustin Senghor, alongside members of the federation’s executive committee.

Gaye reminded the squad of the historic success achieved by the 2023 team, led by star forward Amara Diouf, and challenged the current group, captained by Sidy Barham Ndiaye, to follow in their footsteps.

“You are heading to Morocco with the legitimate ambition of retaining your continental title,” she said.

“I urge you to give your all on the field, in a spirit of fair play, which remains one of the ethical values of sport.

By flying this flag, you represent much more than a football team—you embody the youth, talent, perseverance, and competitive spirit that drive our nation. May your journey be honored with success.”

A Mission Beyond Football

The U17 Africa Cup of Nations, running from March 30 to April 19, will see Senegal seek to reaffirm their dominance in African youth football.

With strong backing from the country’s football leadership and government, the team carries the weight of national expectations as they aim to defend their crown.
