Senegal submitted its bid to host an Africa Cup of Nations tournament between 2031 and 2035 as the country renews its push to stage the continent’s biggest football event.
Senegal’s leaders want to secure a future edition after the nation fell short in previous attempts.
The government shifted its focus to long-term planning when the 2029 AFCON went to another host.
Officials now aim to elevate national infrastructure and reclaim a prominent role in African football more than three decades after Senegal hosted the 1992 tournament.
CAF extended the evaluation period for the 2029–2035 cycle and moved the final announcement to a later date.
CAF executives said they want more time to study the bids, so Senegal and other hopeful nations must wait for the verdict.
Five applications currently stand. Angola, Rwanda, Ethiopia, and Senegal entered the race as individual candidates.
Mali and Guinea joined forces and submitted a joint proposal. Algeria and the Democratic Republic of Congo showed interest earlier in the process but did not confirm their participation before the deadline.
Senegal’s officials see the upcoming decision as a strategic opportunity.
They want to modernise stadiums, strengthen transport links, and expand training facilities across the country.
The government views AFCON as a catalyst for tourism, investment, and national pride.
With the submission now complete, Senegal plans to make its case strongly during CAF’s extended assessment window.
CAF’s final choice will shape the future of African football over the next decade.
The confederation now faces a competitive field of bids, and each candidate wants to secure long-term visibility on the continental stage.
Senegal enters the contest with ambition and renewed determination, hoping to bring AFCON back to Dakar and write a new chapter in its football history.
