The stage is set for a fierce contest in Dakar as Senegal prepares to host the WAFU-A qualifying tournament for the 2025 CAF Women’s Champions League, with five of West Africa’s top clubs vying for a solitary ticket to the prestigious continental finals.
Scheduled from August 5 to 17, the qualifiers will adopt a championship round-robin format, where each team will face every other competitor once.
At the end of five matchdays, only the team sitting atop the standings will secure passage to the final phase of the CAF Women’s Champions League.
With Senegal as hosts, all matches will be played in Dakar, providing a home advantage to local champions, Medina Eagles.
They will need every bit of that support as they come up against tough adversaries such as Mali’s USFAS, Liberia’s Determine Girls, Berewuleng FC from Gambia, and Sierra Leone’s Ram Kamara, who are looking to make a name for themselves as tournament debutants.
The tournament winner will join regional champions from UNAF (North Africa), WAFU-B (West Africa Zone B), UNIFFAC (Central Africa), CECAFA (East Africa), COSAFA (Southern Africa), along with defending champions TP Mazembe, and the host nation for the final phase, which is yet to be announced.
Medina Eagles, buoyed by home support, are determined to clinch their first regional title and make a breakthrough on the continental stage.
However, their path is littered with formidable opposition. USFAS, known for their tactical discipline, arrive with the clear objective of returning Mali to the African elite, while Liberia’s Determine Girls bring a wealth of experience and an aggressive attacking style.
Gambia’s Berewuleng FC, often labelled as dark horses, are equally eager to disrupt the established order, and Ram Kamara’s participation adds an unpredictable twist to the competition.
Every match will be pivotal in this tightly packed schedule, as the round-robin system leaves little margin for error.
The “all-play-all” format ensures that consistency and mental endurance across the two-week stretch will be decisive factors in the quest for qualification.
