Senegal legend El Hadji Diouf eyes tough test against Norway
Former Senegal international El Hadji Diouf has issued a strong caution ahead of Senegal’s crucial group-stage encounter against Norway, insisting the European side must not be underestimated despite the spotlight often falling on one player.
Senegal are set to lock horns with Norway on June 23 in their second group-stage fixture of the upcoming FIFA World Cup, which will be hosted across United States, Canada and Mexico. The clash is already shaping up to be a defining moment for both nations as they seek progression into the knockout stages.
Speaking in an interview with Norwegian outlet TV 2, Diouf acknowledged the magnitude of the challenge awaiting the Lions of Teranga but maintained belief in his country’s ability to rise to the occasion.
“They are a very good team, with good players. It will be difficult,” Diouf admitted. “But Senegal also have a good team at the moment. It will be a crucial match for us—an opportunity to test ourselves against a great team like Norway.”
While much of the pre-match narrative has centered around Norway’s superstar striker Erling Haaland, Diouf was quick to shift focus toward the collective strength of the Scandinavian side.
“We’re not playing against Haaland, but against a whole team,” he stressed. “When you look at their squad, even in the Champions League with clubs like Bodø/Glimt, several players are performing at a very high level.”
Diouf’s comments reflect a growing awareness of Norway’s depth and tactical cohesion, qualities that have helped elevate them into a dangerous unit on the international stage. However, the former forward remains optimistic that Senegal possess the quality, experience, and resilience needed to compete at the highest level.
With both teams eager to assert themselves early in the tournament, the encounter promises to be a high-stakes battle—one that could ultimately shape Senegal’s World Cup journey.
