Senegal confirms death of footballer Cheikh Touré in Ghana, investigation underway

The Senegalese Ministry of African Integration, Foreign Affairs and Senegalese Abroad has confirmed the death of young Senegalese footballer Cheikh Touré in Kumasi, Ghana, and announced the start of an official investigation into the incident.

Authorities said the tragedy occurred on Friday in the Ashanti region, about 250 kilometres from Accra.

Early findings from consular services suggest Touré may have fallen victim to a fraud and extortion network, though details remain under review.

The ministry stated that Touré’s body is currently kept at the Ebenezer Mortuary in Tafo, as preparations continue for his repatriation to Senegal.

Officials described the death as a deeply painful event that demands full clarity from local and regional authorities.

In response, the Ghanaian authorities have received a formal request from Senegal to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the player’s death. The Senegalese government stressed its determination to uncover the truth and ensure that justice is served.

To support the process, the ministry announced that two officers from the Senegalese embassy in Accra will travel to Kumasi starting Sunday.

Their mission is to assist Ghanaian investigators, handle administrative procedures, and coordinate with the family of the deceased regarding the repatriation of his remains.

“The two embassy officials will work closely with Ghanaian authorities to ensure full cooperation and transparency throughout the investigation,” the statement read.

“The ministry also extends its sincere condolences to the family and promises continued support until this matter is fully resolved.”

The ministry reaffirmed that it is monitoring the situation closely, maintaining direct communication with both Ghanaian officials and the victim’s relatives.

The statement added that Senegal remains committed to protecting its citizens abroad and ensuring that their rights are respected.

Cheikh Touré’s death has caused shock and sadness within Senegal’s football community.

The young player had travelled to Ghana in search of new opportunities within the sport, according to early reports gathered by consular services.

Officials have not yet disclosed further information about the suspected fraud network allegedly linked to the case.

However, authorities in both countries have expressed their readiness to cooperate fully in identifying those responsible and clarifying the events leading to the player’s death.

As investigations continue, the Senegalese government urged patience and discretion, calling on the public to allow the legal process to unfold.

The ministry emphasised its solidarity with Touré’s family and assured them that every effort will be made to bring closure and justice.

“The ministry will stand by the family during this difficult time,” the statement concluded.

“We remain determined to ensure that the circumstances of this tragedy are fully clarified.”

The loss of Cheikh Touré marks a painful moment for Senegalese football and a reminder of the challenges many young players face when pursuing their dreams abroad.
