Senegal captain Kalidou Koulibaly opposes Sadio Mane’s retirement comment
Senegal captain Kalidou Koulibaly has made a passionate appeal for teammate Sadio Mané to reconsider any thoughts of retiring from international football, stressing that the forward remains a vital figure for both the present and future of the national team.
Mane, who plies his trade for Al Nassr recently hinted about his imminent retirement from international football after helping the Teranga Lions to secure the AFCON 2025 title in Morocco.
Speaking to lemediacarre, Koulibaly firmly dismissed the idea that Mané would step away from the Senegal national football team, even after reports suggested the striker had hinted at retirement during the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
For Koulibaly, Mané is far more than just a teammate—he is a symbol of Senegalese football and an irreplaceable leader on and off the pitch.
“Sadio Mané retiring from international football? That’s not true. I won’t let him do it and I hope he doesn’t,” Koulibaly stated. “We need him for Senegal’s image and for his talent. He’s capable of giving us a few more years.”
The Senegal captain emphasized that Mané’s quality and experience remain crucial, particularly as the team continues to compete at the highest level on the African continent and beyond. Despite being one of the country’s most decorated players, Mané still has much to offer, according to Koulibaly.
“He’s not a defender, after all. He can still score a few goals for us,” he added, underlining the forward’s enduring attacking threat and importance in decisive moments.
Mané, who currently plays his club football for Al Nassr FC, has been a cornerstone of Senegal’s success in recent years, playing a key role in their Africa Cup of Nations triumph and their strong performances on the global stage.
Koulibaly suggested that any comments hinting at retirement may have been made in the heat of the moment, though he acknowledged that only Mané himself truly knows his intentions. Even so, the Senegal skipper made it clear that the national team is not ready to let go of its talisman.
“Perhaps he spoke in the heat of the moment. Or maybe he was serious,” Koulibaly said. “But we’re not going to let him get away with it like that.”
As Senegal continue to build toward future tournaments, the prospect of losing a player of Mané’s caliber would represent a significant blow. Yet, with strong backing from teammates like Koulibaly, there is growing hope that the star forward will remain a central figure in the Lions of Teranga setup for years to come.
