The Teranga Lions of Senegal have become the first African country to beat England after an impressive 3-1 comeback victory over the Three Lions on Tuesday, June 10.
The match began in England’s favour, with captain Harry Kane opening the scoring in the 7th minute.
The Bayern Munich striker reacted quickest to a rebound in the box, drilling the ball low past the goalkeeper to give England an early lead.
But Senegal, the reigning African champions, grew stronger as the game progressed.
In the 40th minute, Nicolas Jackson set up Ismaila Sarr, who calmly slotted the ball into the bottom left corner to level the score at 1-1 before halftime.
The second half saw the Teranga Lions roar even louder. In the 62nd minute, Iliman Ndiaye showcased superb control before unleashing a powerful close-range strike into the bottom right corner, putting Senegal ahead.
England thought they had equalised in the 84th minute through Jude Bellingham, who converted a rebound following a corner. However, their celebrations were abruptly halted after a VAR review ruled out the goal for a handball in the buildup.
With the clock ticking into stoppage time, Senegal sealed the historic win. Cheikh Sabaly, fed by Lamine Camara, demonstrated remarkable composure inside the box and coolly fired into the bottom right corner in the 93rd minute to make it 3-1.
Following the impressive 3-1 victory, Senegal made history as the first African country to defeat England.
