Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti believes Morocco and Senegal have the potential to spring surprises at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The two African nations will represent the continent at the global tournament, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico this summer.
Senegal have been drawn in Group I alongside France, Norway and a yet-to-be-determined team from the qualifying play-offs scheduled for March. Morocco, meanwhile, will face Brazil, Haiti and Scotland in Group C.
Speaking to Italian newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport about the tournament favourites, Ancelotti said: “As usual, France, Spain, England, Germany, Argentina, and Portugal.”
However, the Italian coach believes the expanded 48-team format could open the door for unexpected results.
“With 48 teams, there will certainly be surprises. Tomorrow we play against Senegal, who beat England (3-1), and they are a very strong team, as are Morocco, who are performing brilliantly. You have to be ready and prepared.”
On the tournament’s expansion, Ancelotti praised the decision, saying it would increase football’s global reach.
“This gives football greater popularity and visibility because it broadens the fan base, which is positive. In terms of competition, the schedule is well-organized, and the number of matches hasn’t increased much. There’s only one extra round.”
He concluded by expressing optimism for the event.
“I expect a great tournament. Let’s see what the draw says, especially geographically, because the tournament is held in three countries, and match locations might have an impact.”
