Semi-final spot at stake as Al Ahly host Espérance
Al Ahly SC must overturn a first-leg deficit against Espérance Sportive de Tunis on Saturday to keep their CAF Champions League campaign alive and reach the semi-finals.
The Egyptian side trail 1-0 following a tense and controversial first leg in Tunis, setting up a decisive return fixture with qualification still in the balance.
The only goal of that encounter came in the 73rd minute, when Mohamed Amine Tougai converted a penalty to give Espérance a narrow advantage.
That decision proved to be a major talking point after the match, with Al Ahly strongly disputing the award of the penalty.
Players and officials from the Cairo club voiced their frustration, arguing that the call had a significant impact on the result.
The incident has added further tension to a fixture already shaped by a long-standing rivalry between two of Africa’s most prominent teams.
Meetings between Al Ahly and Espérance have frequently carried high stakes, and this latest encounter is no exception.
Both sides have extensive experience in continental competitions, and their clashes are often defined by intensity as well as the pressure of expectation.
Al Ahly will face an additional challenge in the return leg, as they are set to play without supporters due to a sanction imposed by the Confederation of African Football.
The absence of fans removes a key element of home advantage, placing greater emphasis on the team’s performance on the pitch.
Despite that setback, the hosts will need to respond decisively if they are to reverse the deficit. A single goal would bring the tie level, but any concession could further complicate their task.
Espérance, meanwhile, travel to Cairo with a slender lead and will look to manage the game carefully.
Maintaining defensive discipline while taking advantage of any opportunities on the counterattack could prove crucial to their chances of progressing.
With the first leg finely poised and emotions still running high, the second leg is expected to be closely contested.
Every moment could prove decisive as both teams seek a place in the semi-finals of the competition.
The match is scheduled to kick off at 19:00 GMT, with the outcome set to determine which of these two continental heavyweights advances.
