The indomitable spirit of Seko Fofana, midfielder for the Ivorian national team and Al-Ittihad club, has propelled his country to achieve remarkable feats, leading them to the semi-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations and capturing the hearts of the entire nation.

During the previous edition of the continental tournament held in Cameroon in 2022, Fofana turned down a call-up from Ivory Coast’s coach, preferring to stay with French club Lens at that time.

However, Ivory Coast soon found themselves in need of Fofana’s prowess after their elimination by Egypt in the round of 16.

Facing severe criticism from Ivorian fans on social media, who accused him of feeling more French than Ivorian, Fofana became a pivotal figure for Ivory Coast.

When French coach Jean-Louis Gasset took over the reins of the Elephants in 2022, he negotiated with Fofana to convince him to return to the national team.

This move proved to be a masterstroke, despite initial setbacks.

According to Didier Gagou Céle, the captain of the Ivorian national team, who won the continental title in 1992, Fofana has been practically the source of all of the Elephants’ goals in the current Africa Cup of Nations.

Fofana, who recently transferred from Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia to his homeland’s Al-Ittihad, scored Ivory Coast’s first goal in the tournament against Guinea-Bissau with a 2-0 victory.

He also netted the equalizing goals in injury time and the winning goal against Mali in extra time in the quarter-finals.

The strength of Seko Fofana, who once dominated the pitch at Lens in the French league, has a significant impact on Ivory Coast.

According to Didier Gagou Céle, “He fights, he puts in a tremendous amount of energy into everything he does.”

Regarding his intermittent relationship with the national team, where he has only participated in 17 matches, scoring 6 goals since his debut in 2017, Céle stated, “He had his reasons, and they have been resolved.

The important thing is that he is with us now.”

Fofana, who is preparing to face the Democratic Republic of Congo in the semi-finals, expressed, “We felt them throughout the match, and we feel like a united country, even though we went through tough times, especially after the Equatorial Guinea match, where we faced insults.

We were in a deep hole, but we are happy because we have made history.”
