Seko Fofana’s future to be decided by Stade Rennais

Seko Fofana’s future is set to be decided by Stade Rennais, with FC Porto keen to turn his loan spell into a permanent transfer following an impressive stint in Portugal.

The 31-year-old midfielder joined Porto on loan in February and quickly made a significant impact, helping the club secure the league title.

During his spell, he contributed three goals and one assist in 12 appearances, underlining his influence in midfield.

With his loan period now coming to an end, discussions have intensified over whether he will remain in Portugal or return to Rennes, where he remains under contract until 2029.

Reports suggest that a permanent move to Porto is a realistic possibility, with both the player and the Portuguese champions understood to be open to continuing their partnership. However, any final agreement depends on the position of Rennes.

According to Maisfutebol, negotiations are effectively on hold while the French club evaluates its plans for the upcoming season before making a final decision.

Rennes, who are currently fifth in Ligue 1 with one match remaining, are considering the outcome of their season before committing to any transfer strategy. Potential qualification for European competition could play a decisive role in shaping their thinking.

A place in the Europa League or even the Champions League for the 2026/27 campaign could influence whether Fofana is retained as part of their squad or allowed to leave permanently.

Despite not fully cementing a long-term role in Rennes’ system since his arrival, Fofana is still viewed as an experienced midfielder capable of contributing at a high level, particularly in European competition.

At the same time, a potential sale could also provide Rennes with additional financial flexibility to reinforce their squad in other areas during the transfer window.

Fofana, formerly of Lens, Udinese and Al Nassr, remains one of the more experienced midfield options in Rennes’ squad, and his future is expected to be clarified in the coming weeks.

For now, FC Porto are waiting for a final response from Rennes before deciding whether to move forward with a permanent deal.
