Ecuador head coach Sebastián Beccacece has spoken ahead of their friendly against Morocco

The head coach of Ecuador, Sebastián Beccacece, has admitted he is heading into their upcoming friendly against Morocco with uncertainty.

According to him, the North African side’s recent coaching change is a major unknown factor that could go against his side on the matchday.

The two national teams are set to meet on Friday, 27, in a preparatory clash as Morocco continues their build-up toward the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Coaching Change Clouds Morocco’s Identity

According to the Ecuador head coach, Morocco’s style of play remains difficult to predict under newly appointed manager Mohamed Ouahbi.

Speaking to Spanish outlet Diario AS, Beccacece acknowledged the challenge of preparing for a team whose tactical direction is still evolving.

“We don’t know who we will face,” he said, underlining the uncertainty surrounding the Atlas Lions.

While Ouahbi arrives with a strong reputation after guiding Morocco’s under-20 side to World Cup success, Beccacece noted that it is still unclear how that success will translate at senior level.

Lessons from Morocco’s World Cup Surprise

The Argentine coach referenced Morocco’s approach ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, when Walid Regragui took charge shortly before the tournament and led the team to a historic semi-final finish, the first by an African nation.

“They have created their own model,” he said. “I don’t know if it comes from optimism or if it has become a habit.”

Danger on the Wings

Beccacece identified key attacking threats within the Moroccan squad, including Abde Ezzalzouli, Brahim Díaz, and Achraf Hakimi.

He highlighted their pace and creativity in wide areas as one of Morocco’s biggest strengths, suggesting that their wing play could pose serious problems for Ecuador.

A Valuable Test for Both Sides

The Ecuador manager also pointed out similarities between Morocco’s attacking style and that of the Côte d’Ivoire national football team, whom Ecuador are scheduled to face next.

“Their wingers are very similar,” he said, indicating that the friendly will serve as a useful tactical rehearsal.

For Ecuador, the match presents an opportunity to assess their squad against high-level opposition. For Morocco, it will be a crucial early test for Ouahbi as he begins shaping his team, experimenting with tactics, and building cohesion ahead of the global tournament.

With the World Cup on the horizon and fixtures against Brazil, Scotland, and Haiti looming, the Atlas Lions will be eager to build momentum and clarity under their new manager.
