Savinho has made it clear he is eager to carve out his own legacy at Manchester City, expressing frustration over constant comparisons to former club icon Riyad Mahrez.
Since joining the Premier League champions, the 19-year-old Brazilian winger has often been likened to Mahrez, not only for his similar technical flair but also for donning the Algerian’s iconic No. 26 shirt.
While Savinho initially embraced the parallels, he now feels the time has come to step out of Mahrez’s shadow.
“I don’t like being compared to him,” Savinho stated firmly. “Mahrez has his qualities, he was a great player for Manchester City, but I have my qualities too.”
The young winger’s comments signal a desire to be recognised for his own abilities rather than living in the shadow of a club legend.
Though the comparisons began as a source of pride, they have since become a source of irritation.
From Admiration to Independence
Savinho has never hidden his admiration for Mahrez. Growing up in Brazil, he often watched the Algerian’s dazzling footwork and clinical finishing, hoping one day to emulate his style.
“It was my dream to play like Mahrez,” Savinho previously revealed. “I asked Ederson how he was in training, and he told me he was incredible.”
Even his choice of the No. 26 jersey was a nod to Mahrez, whom he viewed as a role model. “Some say we are similar, but I think it’s just that he plays his way, and I play mine.
But yes, I chose my number because of him. I always admired him because we play the same position. He is very skilled, an extraordinary player and goal scorer,” Savinho explained.
However, admiration has now evolved into a desire for individuality. While he remains respectful of Mahrez’s legacy, Savinho is keen to be seen as more than just the Algerian’s successor.
A New Chapter for City’s Young Talent
Savinho’s frustration highlights the challenges young players face when stepping into roles previously occupied by club legends.
Mahrez, who played a pivotal role in City’s domestic and European success, left big shoes to fill.
But Savinho, with his explosive pace, intricate dribbling, and eye for goal, is focused on creating his own path.
Since arriving from Troyes, the Brazilian has shown flashes of brilliance, earning praise from both fans and teammates.
His skill set, while reminiscent of Mahrez’s, carries its own unique flair—something Savinho is determined to showcase without the weight of constant comparisons.
“I have my own game. I want to be seen as Savinho, not the next Mahrez,” he reiterated.
City’s Bright Future
Manchester City fans have always embraced creative wingers, from Shaun Wright-Phillips to Leroy Sané, and of course, Mahrez.
Now, Savinho hopes to add his name to that list—not as a copy of a past star but as a standout in his own right.
His journey is still in its early stages, but the young Brazilian’s message is clear: while Mahrez’s legacy at City remains untouched, Savinho is ready to write his own chapter at the Etihad.
Savinho on Riyad @Mahrez22: “I don’t like people comparing me to him. Mahrez has his qualities, he was a great #ManCity player, I have mine as well.
“Some say we’re similar, but I think it’s just he plays his way, I play my way, but yes I chose it [the number 26 shirt] because…
