Savinho scores on Tottenham debut as Newcastle and Everton reach League Cup third round

Tottenham began their English League Cup campaign with a convincing 5-1 win over Charlton, as new signing Savinho marked his debut with a goal. Newcastle United, Everton and Bradford City also progressed, although Newcastle needed a late winner to defeat West Bromwich Albion.

Micky Moore and Dominic Solanke put Tottenham in control before half-time, scoring in the 41st and 45th minutes respectively. The hosts carried that advantage into the second half and extended it through substitute Kevin Danso.

Danso had been introduced just two minutes earlier when he struck in the 67th minute to make it 3-0.

Savinho then came on for Solanke in the 71st minute, making his first appearance for Tottenham following his move from Manchester City. The forward needed only 11 minutes to announce himself, scoring in the 82nd minute for his first goal in Tottenham colours.

Three minutes later, Savinho produced another important contribution. After a solo run into the penalty area, his shot struck Ben Davies and ended up in the net, giving Tottenham a 5-0 lead.

Charlton managed a consolation goal through Lloyd Jones, but Tottenham completed a comfortable victory to move into the next round.

Everton hit Preston for four

Everton were equally emphatic, defeating Preston 4-0.

Thierno Barry scored a hat-trick, finding the net in the 25th, 59th and 70th minutes. Brian Johnson added Everton’s fourth goal two minutes later to complete a dominant performance from the Toffees.

Bradford City also advanced, overcoming Burnley 4-2 in a penalty shoot-out after the match finished goalless in normal time.

Barnes sends Newcastle through

Newcastle United survived a tougher test against West Bromwich Albion, winning 3-2 after a late goal from Harvey Barnes.

West Bromwich Albion took the lead in the 19th minute through Isaac Price, but Newcastle responded when Bazoumana Toure equalised in the 38th minute.

Barnes, who had come on as a substitute, then put Newcastle ahead with his first goal of the match. West Bromwich Albion refused to surrender and Price restored parity in the 77th minute.

The decisive moment arrived four minutes later. Barnes scored again in the 81st minute to settle the contest and send Newcastle through.

The result completed a mixed set of outcomes for the clubs involved, with Tottenham and Everton recording comfortable victories, Bradford City winning through penalties and Newcastle advancing after a closely fought encounter.
