Saudi side Al-Qadsiah secure signing of Moroccan defender Sofiane El Karouani
Saudi Arabian side Al‑Qadsiah FC have completed the signing of Moroccan international Sofiane El Karouani from FC Utrecht on a free transfer that will take effect next summer once his current contract expires.
The move follows an impressive campaign by the left back in the Dutch league, where he has emerged as one of the competition’s standout players in his position. His attacking contributions and ability to support build-up play have played a key role in Utrecht’s performances this season.
Sources indicate that Al Qadsiah have already reached a full agreement with the Moroccan defender after settling all contractual terms. The Saudi club is now preparing to make an official announcement confirming the deal in the coming period.
Despite concerns that a move to the Saudi league could affect his international prospects, El Karouani reportedly remains confident about his chances of returning to the Morocco national football team. Several current Atlas Lions players are already based in Saudi Arabia, including goalkeeper Yassine Bounou and striker Youssef En‑Nesyri.
The defender has enjoyed a productive season with Utrecht, featuring in 40 matches across all competitions. During that period he scored three goals and delivered 14 assists, highlighting his influence in the team’s attacking play despite operating from a defensive role.
In the Dutch league alone, El Karouani has contributed to 12 goals after scoring twice and providing ten assists in 24 rounds, placing him among the defenders with the highest number of goal involvements this season.
The Moroccan full back joined Utrecht in the summer of 2023 from NEC Nijmegen, the club where he progressed through the youth ranks before establishing himself in the senior team and gaining recognition in Dutch football.
Known for his physical strength and pace on the left flank, El Karouani earned his first call-up to the Moroccan national team in 2021. Since then, he has made five international appearances, including two matches during the past year.
