Saudi clubs ready fresh bid for Belgian-Congolese Youri Tielemans
Several Saudi Pro League (SPL) clubs are reportedly preparing a renewed attempt to lure Aston Villa midfielder Youri Tielemans to the Middle East during the upcoming 2026 summer transfer window.
The Belgian international of DR Congolese descent, who has become a cornerstone of Unai Emery’s midfield since arriving on a free transfer from Leicester City in 2023, is once again at the center of high-value transfer speculation as Saudi officials look to bolster their league with proven European talent.
The move comes as Aston Villa faces mounting pressure to balance its books in accordance with UEFA’s increasingly stringent financial sustainability regulations.
Having recently incurred a £9.5 million fine for breaching financial fair play thresholds, the Birmingham-based club is currently operating under a tightening cap that will see spending limits drop to 70% of total revenue.
Consequently, the sale of a high-value asset like Tielemans represents a strategic financial opportunity. Because he was signed without a transfer fee, any multi-million-euro deal would be recorded as pure profit on the club’s balance sheet, providing the necessary liquidity to fund summer reinforcements.
Reports suggest that Al-Hilal is leading the chase, with a potential bid estimated between €45 million and €55 million.
While Tielemans has been a “major influence” at Villa Park, his 2025–26 campaign has been interrupted by a persistent ankle injury sustained in January.
Despite the setback, his statistics remain impressive, maintaining an 86% pass completion rate across 17 Premier League appearances this season.
The Belgian’s departure would also provide significant relief to Villa’s wage bill, where he currently sits as one of the top earners alongside goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez. To mitigate his recent absence and prepare for potential shifts in the roster, Villa recently secured the return of Douglas Luiz on loan from Juventus.
While Tielemans is reportedly settled in the Premier League under Emery’s tutelage, the combination of a lucrative offer from the SPL and Villa’s need for financial compliance may make a summer exit inevitable for both parties.
