Saudi Arabia coach Donis plans tactical switch for Gulf Cup 27 final

Giorgos Donis is set to change Saudi Arabia’s formation for Tuesday’s Arabian Gulf Cup “Gulf Cup 27” final against the United Arab Emirates in Jeddah.

The two sides will meet at Alinma Stadium in the final of the 27th edition of the Gulf competition, with the Greek manager preparing to use three central midfielders rather than the two he has selected in Saudi Arabia’s previous four matches.

Saudi newspaper Al Riyadiya reports that Abdullah Al-Khaibari, Mohammed Kanno and Nasser Al-Dawsari are expected to form the midfield three.

Donis has consistently started Kanno alongside another midfielder during the tournament’s past four games, while Saleh Abu Al-Shamat has been used in the playmaker role.

The proposed change would give Saudi Arabia an additional player in midfield as they attempt to secure the trophy, although the final selection will not be confirmed until shortly before kick-off.

There could also be a change in defence, with Hassan Tambakti expected to return to the starting line-up. He was among the substitutes when Saudi Arabia defeated Qatar on penalties in the semi-final.

Up front, Donis intends to start Firas Al-Buraikan. However, he has yet to decide whether Abdullah Al-Hamdan will play alongside him or whether Al-Buraikan will operate as the team’s lone striker.

Donis is expected to settle the remaining selection issues during the team meeting with his players several hours before the final begins.

Saudi Arabia are seeking their first trophy for 23 years. Their most recent success came in the same Gulf competition in 2003.
