Sandile Zungu camp challenges Danny Jordaan to public SAFA debate

Supporters of South African Football Association (SAFA) presidential candidate Sandile Zungu have challenged incumbent president Danny Jordaan to take part in a public debate ahead of the leadership contest.

Zungu’s campaign is being backed by a broad coalition that includes several prominent football legends. His supporters believe a debate between the two candidates would give the football public a clearer understanding of their plans and qualifications for the position.

Candidates seeking the SAFA presidency must first pass a compliance screening and background check conducted by the Independent Governance Committee. The process is a requirement before any contender can stand for election.

Joe Seanego, a football administrator campaigning for Zungu, has questioned the way those requirements are being applied. Speaking to KickOff, he said: “SAFA appears to be manipulating these requirements. We are confident that our candidate, Mr. Sandile Zungu, meets all the stipulated criteria, having previously served in a SAFA Region.”

Seanego did not specify which requirements he believed were being manipulated, but said Zungu’s previous involvement in a SAFA Region demonstrated that he satisfied the necessary conditions to contest the presidency.

He also called on Jordaan to appear alongside Zungu at an open forum where both candidates could explain their vision for the future of South African football.

“We are challenging Jordaan to participate in a public debate. We would like to see the two candidates, Danny Jordaan and Sandile Zungu, engage in an open platform where they can articulate their vision for the role of SAFA president,” Seanego said.

The proposed debate, according to Zungu’s supporters, would allow voters and other members of the football community to compare the candidates directly rather than assessing their campaigns separately.

“A debate would provide clarity and offer an informed perspective on who is best suited to lead. It will reveal each candidate’s understanding of the game. Jordaan has been at the helm for thirteen years; how much longer does he require to demonstrate his capabilities?” Seanego added.

Jordaan is the incumbent SAFA president, while Zungu is seeking to unseat him in the forthcoming presidential election. Before candidates can formally proceed, however, they must successfully complete the compliance and background-check process overseen by the Independent Governance Committee.

The controversy comes as SAFA deals with the process of handing over the list of presidential hopefuls. Zungu’s supporters maintain that their candidate meets the stated criteria and are pressing for the contest to include a public comparison of the two men’s leadership visions.
