Samuel Kalu revives career with Botev Plovdiv after struggles in England
Samuel Kalu has revived his career in Bulgaria after struggling with inconsistency and injuries in England and France.
The former Super Eagles winger, 28, has emerged as a key player for Botev Plovdiv in the Parva Liga, following his free transfer in September 2025 after leaving Watford.
According to Complete Sports, Kalu has gradually established himself in the starting eleven, helping the Canaries in both domestic league and cup competitions.
Over the 2025/26 season, Kalu has made 20 appearances, contributing three goals and two assists. His technical style, particularly his ability to cut in from the flank and deliver powerful shots, has become central to Botev Plovdiv’s attacking strategy.
Kalu’s form peaked in the spring of 2026 during a match against Spartak Varna, where he scored twice, combining instinctive finishing with a solo run.
Beyond scoring, his increased work rate has been evident in both pressing opponents high up the pitch and tracking back defensively, signaling that his previous fitness struggles are behind him.
Off the pitch, Kalu’s experience and professionalism have made him an influential figure in the locker room. Botev Plovdiv’s management praises his quick adaptation to the local culture and his mentorship of younger players, which has helped maintain squad cohesion as the club competes for the league title and European qualification.
Having overcome earlier setbacks in England and France, Kalu’s resurgence in Bulgaria highlights his resilience and ability to adapt.
His performances have not only elevated his club’s title ambitions but have also reaffirmed his status as a key figure in Nigerian football.
