Samuel Eto’o Reflects on Cameroon’s Narrow World Cup Defeat to Mexico
Cameroon’s star striker Samuel Eto’o expressed his disappointment after the Indomitable Lions’ 1-0 loss to Mexico in their opening World Cup match.
Speaking to France Football, Eto’o admitted the team had hoped for a better start. “We were hoping to get into the competition in a better way, but we’re a little disappointed,” he said. “We had a positive attitude, but God had other plans.”
With the loss putting pressure on their World Cup campaign, Eto’o highlighted the importance of their upcoming clash against Croatia. “Now we have to think about this next match against Croatia, which will determine our future. Like them, we’ll need a victory.”
He remained cautiously optimistic, acknowledging the unpredictable nature of football: “We’ll have to do everything we can to get back into the race for qualification. Football has shown us that it’s not an exact science. It won’t be easy, but we’ll prepare and put what happened behind us.”
When asked about the prospect of facing Brazil in their home country later in the tournament, Eto’o downplayed its immediate significance. “Brazil at home? This match is still a long way off. The most important thing is still Croatia.”
He also stressed the need to focus on the positives despite the defeat. “It’s important to stay positive, as I said. It wasn’t all negative against a good Mexican team either. We know what we have to do.”
Cameroon will look to regroup and secure crucial points when they face Croatia in their next Group A fixture.
