Samuel Eto’o defies government block as FIFA and CAF back Fecafoot election

Samuel Eto’o insists the Cameroonian Football Federation will hold its presidential election on 29 November, despite a government order to suspend the process.

Fecafoot has confirmed that FIFA and CAF delegates will supervise the vote, deepening a confrontation that now pits international football institutions directly against state authorities.

The election crisis sharpens by the day. The Ministry of Sports suspended the electoral process over what it called “persistent irregularities” and asked the Ministry of Territorial Administration to block any General Assembly. Fecafoot refused to comply.

Only Eto’o submitted a valid candidacy, after other applicants failed to meet endorsement requirements.

That clearance positioned the former national team captain to secure a second term in Yaoundé.

The government stepped in, warning of rising tensions and denouncing what it described as a “targeted exclusion” of rivals. The dispute has since evolved into a full institutional showdown.

Fecafoot continues to rely on FIFA’s strict non-interference statutes, which limit how far national authorities can intervene in football governance.

The federation appears confident in that protection and has proceeded with preparations.

A statement released on Monday confirmed that Fecafoot will host its Elective General Assembly as scheduled in Mbankomo.

The federation announced that FIFA and CAF officials, including members of the FIFA Council, will attend the session to oversee proceedings and ensure the integrity of the vote.

The notification followed a videoconference between the international bodies and the Fecafoot Electoral Commission.

Fecafoot’s move places the election under direct international supervision, bolstering its position against government objections. With the vote two weeks away, the standoff remains complete.

Unless a dramatic shift occurs, Eto’o looks set for re-election, with FIFA and CAF observing every step.
