Samson Baidoo: Lens centre-back linked with Man City move in England transfer rumours

Manchester City are monitoring Lens centre-back Samson Baidoo as the Austrian-Ghanaian defender emerges as a potential long-term option for the Premier League champions.

The 21-year-old, who joined RC Lens from Red Bull Salzburg on 17 July 2025, has been linked with a move to the Etihad, with the latest speculation recorded on 5 March 2026. Transfermarkt lists his current market value at €12.00m, a figure likely to be viewed as modest in the context of City’s recent defensive spending.

Baidoo, born in Graz on 31 March 2004, stands at 1.90m and plays primarily as a right-footed centre-back. He holds dual nationality with Austria and Ghana and has come through the Red Bull development pathway, progressing from FC Liefering Youth and AKA Red Bull Salzburg age groups to FC Liefering, before stepping up to Salzburg’s first team and then on to Ligue 1.

Since arriving in France, his rising value has reflected his development, climbing from €8.00m at Salzburg in June 2025 to €12.00m at Lens by December 2025. His contractual situation at Lens has not been publicly disclosed and no expiry date is listed, which has fuelled debate over whether he could eventually maneuver towards free agent status if no long-term deal is finalised.

The reported probability of a move remains unspecified (“?”), and there is no indication that negotiations between the clubs are advanced at this stage. However, City’s interest comes as they continue to refresh their defensive options, with Baidoo’s Red Bull schooling and top-flight experience in Austria and France seen as attractive attributes.

If a transfer were to materialise, a switch from Lens to Manchester City could accelerate Baidoo’s career trajectory, testing his potential at the highest level and shaping his reputation as one of Europe’s emerging centre-backs.
