Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah has paid a heartfelt tribute to his late teammate Diogo Jota, following the Portuguese forward’s tragic death in a car crash on Thursday.
Jota, 28, and his younger brother Andre lost their lives in an accident while travelling to Liverpool, sparking a global wave of mourning across the football world.
Tributes have poured in from clubs, fans, and current players who continue to grapple with the loss of one of football’s most admired professionals.
On Friday, Salah joined the chorus of grief, taking to social media to express his deep sorrow in an emotional message that highlighted the pain felt within the Liverpool squad.
“I am truly lost for words,” Salah wrote. “Until yesterday, I never thought there would be something that would frighten me of going back to Liverpool after the break… It’s going to be extremely difficult to accept that Diogo won’t be there when we go back.”
He continued, “My thoughts are with his wife, his children, and of course his parents who suddenly lost their children… They will never be forgotten.”
Egyptian outlet Yallakora reports that Salah, who was on break following Liverpool’s Premier League triumph, is expected to return to England shortly.
The tragedy has deeply affected the club, prompting the temporary suspension of pre-season activities.
Liverpool were scheduled to face Preston North End, AC Milan, and Yokohama Marinos in the coming weeks, but those fixtures are now uncertain as the club prioritises grieving and remembrance.
