Russia coach claims Nigeria used second-string squad to audition players for Russian clubs
Russian national team assistant coach Nikolai Pisarev has claimed Nigeria used their friendly against Russia to give fringe players an opportunity to showcase their talents to clubs in the Russian Premier League (RPL).
The Super Eagles recovered from a two-goal deficit to secure a thrilling 3-3 draw against the 2018 World Cup hosts, with teenagers Peter Edokpolor and Abdullahi Umar playing key roles in the late comeback.
However, Pisarev suggested Nigeria’s depleted squad had another objective, arguing that the players selected were using the international fixture to attract attention from Russian clubs.
Nigeria manager Eric Chelle was without several established stars, including Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, Samuel Chukwueze, Alex Iwobi, Wilfred Ndidi and Calvin Bassey.
Their absence opened the door for several less experienced players to feature, with Chelle handing international debuts to nine promising talents.
Pisarev questions Nigeria’s selection
Speaking in comments reported by Championat, Pisarev suggested the Nigerian players had an opportunity to use the friendly as a platform to impress potential employers in Russia.
“And you know, Nigeria’s second team has arrived… You know what to do? Show your mettle here in the RPL. Sell yourself.
“Their first team is doing just fine. Osimhen, Lookman and company, they’re doing just fine.”
The Russian coach’s remarks highlighted the difference between the squad Nigeria fielded and the group of established internationals who were unavailable for the encounter.
Osimhen and Lookman are among Nigeria’s leading attacking figures, while Chukwueze, Iwobi, Ndidi and Bassey have also played important roles for the national team.
Their absence meant Chelle had to rely on alternative options, providing opportunities for emerging players to demonstrate their capabilities on the international stage.
Pisarev’s comments suggested he viewed the match as a chance for those players to raise their profiles in the Russian domestic league.
Super Eagles fight back in six-goal thriller
Despite falling behind, Nigeria showed resilience to secure a draw in an entertaining contest.
Kelechi Iheanacho gave the Super Eagles an early advantage, opening the scoring in the 10th minute before Russia responded through Lechi Sadulaev, Matvey Kislyak and Aleksey Miranchuk.
The three goals left Nigeria trailing 3-1 with only 12 minutes of normal time remaining, putting the visitors under pressure to avoid defeat.
Edokpolor came off the bench to reduce the deficit in the 78th minute, giving Nigeria renewed hope of mounting a comeback.
The Super Eagles continued pushing forward, and 19-year-old Umar delivered a stoppage-time assist for Akor Adams to complete the recovery and secure a 3-3 draw.
The late equaliser underlined the impact of Nigeria’s younger players, who helped rescue a result after the team appeared destined for defeat.
Chelle hands nine players their debuts
Chelle used the friendly to assess emerging talent, handing debuts to nine players as he explored options beyond Nigeria’s established internationals.
Samuel James, Isaac James, Stephen Michael, Wilfred Igor, Chibuzo Nwoko, Vince Osuji, Peter Edokpolor, Abdullahi Umar and Umar Abubakar were all given opportunities to represent the Super Eagles.
The experience provided the newcomers with valuable exposure at senior international level while allowing the coaching staff to evaluate their potential contributions to the national team.
Edokpolor and Umar were particularly influential in the closing stages, combining to help Nigeria recover from a two-goal deficit and avoid defeat.
Although Pisarev interpreted Nigeria’s selection as an opportunity for fringe players to attract interest from RPL clubs, the match also gave Chelle a chance to assess his squad depth.
The draw offered Nigeria encouragement from the performances of their emerging talents, while the Russian assistant coach’s remarks added another dimension to the discussion surrounding the purpose of the friendly.
