Rulani Mokwena turns down €75,000 monthly salary to join Al Ittihad

South African coach Rulani Mokwena has reportedly turned down a lucrative offer from Libyan side Al Ittihad, valued at €75,000 per month.

Recent reports suggested that the Libyan Premier League club had entered advanced negotiations with Mokwena to secure his services.

The discussions came amid uncertainty over Mokwena’s future at MC Alger following the team’s early exit from the CAF Champions League.

The 39-year-old coach raised eyebrows during a difficult spell, hinting that the players’ performances would determine whether he remained at the Algerian club.

His remarks followed a defeat to Sead Ramovic’s CR Belouizdad in the Algerian Cup, extending MC Alger’s winless run to four games and fueling frustration among fans.

Reports now suggest that, MC Alger’s management has since reaffirmed their support for Mokwena, confirming that he will continue as head coach.

The report adds that Mokwena rejected Al Ittihad’s offer after receiving assurances from his current club, where his contract runs through the 2026/27 season.

It remains uncertain whether Al Ittihad will renew their pursuit of the Soweto-born tactician, who has previously managed some of Africa’s biggest clubs, including Orlando Pirates and Wydad Athletic Club.

Mokwena continues to be one of the continent’s most sought-after coaches, thanks to his highly regarded coaching abilities.
