Portuguese coach Rui Vitoria has broken his silence on his departure from the helm of the Egyptian national football team, sharing insights into his tenure after being dismissed earlier this month.

Vitoria’s 19-month tenure came to an end in the wake of Egypt’s exit from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in the round of 16, where they succumbed to a penalty shootout loss against the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Taking to his Instagram account, the former Pharaohs coach offered a succinct assessment of his time with the team, stating, “By decision of the EFA (Egyptian Football Association), my cycle as coach of the Egyptian national team has ended.”

Reflecting on the days following the official announcement, Vitoria highlighted key statistics from his tenure, noting that during his 18 matches in charge, the team suffered only one defeat. Additionally, he earned a nomination for the best national team coach in the world.

Vitoria’s departure occurred amid the broader context of his mission to build a robust foundation for Egyptian football, focusing on present and future challenges with a commitment to excellence.

His initial four-year contract, signed in the pursuit of preparing and revitalizing the team for the 2026 World Cup, faced an untimely conclusion.

Arriving during a challenging period for the national team, Vitoria aimed to reshape their trajectory, and the results demonstrated progress.

Despite facing disappointments, notably the penalty shootout elimination in the recent AFCON, Vitoria emphasized the adversities faced and hinted at addressing them in the future.

Expressing gratitude to Egypt, Vitoria described his experience as enriching both professionally and personally, leaving him convinced that the future of Egyptian football holds promise if collective dedication persists.

The Portuguese coach departed with a message of appreciation, concluding, “Thank you, Egypt, for a memorable trip.”
