Rooney slams Slot for picking Alexander Isak over Hugo Ekitike in Liverpool’s loss to Man United
Wayne Rooney has criticised Liverpool manager Arne Slot for his decision to start Alexander Isak instead of Hugo Ekitike in Sunday’s 2–1 defeat to Manchester United at Anfield, arguing that the Dutchman ‘got it wrong’ with his team selection.
Isak, who is of Eritrean descent, joined Liverpool this summer from Newcastle United but has struggled for form since the move.
Ekitike, meanwhile, who has Cameroonian roots, impressed in recent substitute appearances, prompting debate among fans and pundits about who should lead the Reds’ attack.
Speaking on The Wayne Rooney Show, the Manchester United legend said Slot’s choice was costly.
“I wouldn’t play Isak, he hasn’t looked ready since coming from Newcastle,” Rooney said.
“He hasn’t trained, hasn’t had a pre-season. It’s so important. While Newcastle were training, he was probably sat at home on the phone to his agent for six hours a day trying to get a move.
“On performances, he doesn’t deserve to be playing ahead of Ekitike.”
Isak was substituted in the second half after struggling to make an impact, while Liverpool’s attack only began to look fluid following Ekitike’s introduction.
Rooney added that Isak’s lack of preparation is now showing in his sharpness and match rhythm.
The defeat extended Liverpool’s poor run of form, marking their fourth consecutive loss in all competitions — a first for Slot in his managerial career.
Rooney believes the pressure is beginning to tell on the Dutch tactician, who appeared visibly frustrated on the touchline.
“He was arguing with the officials on the touchline, I haven’t seen that before from him. We’re starting to see things unfold which shows that there’s pressure there,” he noted.
The result leaves Liverpool outside the Premier League’s top four, while questions continue to mount over Slot’s tactical decisions and his handling of the club’s new attacking recruits.
