Wayne Rooney has urged Manchester United to re-sign David de Gea, arguing that the Spanish goalkeeper remains a better option than current number one Andre Onana, whose form has come under intense scrutiny this season.
The former United captain made the recommendation during an interview with Amazon Prime Video Sport, as the club’s struggles in the Premier League continue under manager Ruben Amorim.
United are enduring their worst league campaign since 1992, sitting 16th on the table with only 39 points and hoping for Europa League success to salvage the season.
Onana has become a focal point for criticism, with fans increasingly frustrated by his inconsistent performances since joining from Inter Milan.
The Cameroonian shot-stopper has faced growing calls to be replaced after a string of high-profile errors.
Rooney believes De Gea’s return would provide much-needed stability in goal, just two years after the Spaniard departed Old Trafford on a free transfer.
“I’d sign David de Gea back. I think Manchester United have missed him and I think he would do an amazing job,” the ex-striker said.
De Gea, who spent 12 seasons with United, is currently at Fiorentina, where he has helped the Italian side reach the Europa Conference League semi-finals and secure a European qualification spot.
He is due to face his former club in a pre-season clash this summer, potentially offering United a closer look amid growing calls for change.
Rooney also named Napoli’s Victor Osimhen and Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi as other transfer targets to help restore the club’s fortunes.
