Ronwen Williams celebrates vital clean sheet as Sundowns beat Milford

Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Ronwen Williams said he “showed my class” after helping the Brazilians secure a long-awaited clean sheet in their 2-0 victory over Milford FC at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Wednesday.

The result extended Sundowns’ run of wins, but the shutout was particularly significant for a side that has found it difficult to prevent opponents from scoring in recent matches. Williams, who has been in goal for Bafana Bafana, has regularly conceded despite Sundowns continuing to collect points.

The defensive inconsistency has contributed to Sundowns occupying second place in the Betway Premiership standings. Orlando Pirates are currently top on goal difference.

Williams was named Man of the Match against Betway Premiership newcomers Milford and welcomed the opportunity to finish the game without being beaten.

“Yeah, amazing, we needed this, this clean sheet. We have been under pressure as a team, as a defence but today we showed our worth,” Williams told SuperSport TV after the match.

The goalkeeper also felt the performance offered a personal response after a difficult period in which Sundowns had struggled to establish greater defensive stability.

“I think I showed my class as well. It’s long overdue. I’m just glad that I could get the job done today. I’m just glad for my team, the clean sheet.

“We have been working hard. We have been trying to rectify our mistakes. We haven’t had the stability as well in the team. But it will come, it’s a long season.”

Sundowns’ failure to keep opponents at bay had become an issue despite their ability to continue winning matches. The clean sheet against Milford therefore provided relief for Williams and the defence, as well as a potentially important boost as the season develops.

The Brazilians remain behind Orlando Pirates on goal difference, meaning they must continue to collect victories while attempting to improve their defensive record.

Williams also acknowledged the demands placed on Sundowns as they try to maintain their challenge at the top of the table.

“The Masandawana shouldn’t…they should keep pushing us but it’s a long season…when last, it feels amazing.”

The clean sheet gives Williams and his team-mates something to build on as they seek consistency at the back. Sundowns will hope the performance against Milford marks the beginning of greater defensive stability rather than being an isolated result.

For Williams, however, the immediate priority was completing the job on the night. After working with the team to address its mistakes, he was pleased that Sundowns finally managed to keep their opponents out and claim another victory in the Betway Premiership.
