World Cup 2026: Ronald Koeman ‘extremely disappointed’ after Netherlands lose to Morocco
Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman said he was “extremely disappointed” after his side were eliminated by Morocco on penalties in the Round of 32 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, while acknowledging that the Atlas Lions deserved their place in the next round.
The Dutch were knocked out after Morocco recovered to stay in the contest before prevailing in the penalty shootout, ending the Netherlands’ hopes of progressing further in the tournament.
Speaking at his post-match press conference, Koeman reflected on a result that left him frustrated, believing his team had failed to take control of the match when they had the opportunity.
“I am extremely disappointed. We started well, but we failed to kill the game. Morocco stayed in the match and ultimately beat us on penalties.”
Despite the disappointment of the defeat, the Netherlands manager was quick to recognise the quality shown by Morocco throughout the contest.
Koeman praised the Atlas Lions for their determination, saying they continued to believe until the final whistle before earning victory in the shootout.
“Morocco is a high-quality team. They continued to believe until the very end and deserve respect for their qualification.”
His comments reflected admiration for the performance produced by the Moroccan side, whose resilience ultimately secured their place in the last 16 of the competition.
Attention also turned to Koeman’s own future following the Netherlands’ exit, but the coach declined to discuss whether the defeat would have any impact on his position.
Instead, he insisted that the immediate focus remained on coming to terms with the disappointment of the elimination rather than considering what lies ahead.
“I’m not thinking about my future right now. What matters today is the disappointment of this elimination.”
The defeat brought the Netherlands’ World Cup campaign to an end, with Koeman left to reflect on a match in which he believed his team had made a strong start but failed to convert that advantage into victory.
For Morocco, the dramatic penalty shootout triumph secured progression to the Round of 16, while Koeman’s side departed the tournament after a contest the Dutch coach admitted had ended in deep disappointment.
