Ronald Araujo says farewell to Barcelona as Liverpool loan begins

Ronald Araujo has said goodbye to Barcelona after eight years at the club, with the Uruguay defender moving to Liverpool on loan with an option to buy for €55m.

Araujo announced the end of his time at Barcelona in a message to supporters on Instagram, bringing an eight-year spell with the Catalan club to a close as he prepares to begin a new chapter in England.

“It’s time to face a new challenge. After eight years, I take with me many beautiful memories, the knowledge I have gained and, above all, many people who accompanied me on this journey. I will always be grateful to you, Culers,” he wrote.

The decision to leave followed discussions with Barcelona manager Hansi Flick. Araujo concluded that he would not receive the playing time he needed at Barcelona this season and chose to accept the opportunity to join Liverpool.

His move includes an option for the Premier League club to make the transfer permanent for €55m.

Araujo had already seen his status at Barcelona change during the previous campaign. He lost his place in the starting XI after coming under significant pressure following a mistake against Chelsea in the UEFA Champions League.

Although he returned to the team afterwards, he did not reclaim a regular starting position. That reduced role contributed to his decision to seek a fresh challenge away from the club where he had spent the bulk of his professional career.

The departure comes despite Barcelona rejecting an offer of about €50m from Juventus in January 2025. Araujo subsequently renewed his contract with Barcelona, having previously dreamed of becoming one of the club’s leaders.

That ambition was eventually fulfilled, but his time as a senior figure at the club has ended with the decision to pursue a move to Liverpool.

Araujo joined Barcelona eight years ago and developed into an important defender for the club. His farewell message reflected both his appreciation for the period he spent in Catalonia and his readiness to move on.

The loan arrangement gives him the chance to play in England while Liverpool retain the option to sign him permanently for €55m. For Barcelona, it marks the conclusion of a relationship that survived interest from Juventus and a contract renewal before the two sides ultimately parted company.

The move also follows a period in which Araujo’s place in Barcelona’s team became less secure. After his error against Chelsea, the pressure surrounding him increased, and while he was given opportunities to return, he was unable to restore himself to the starting line-up on a permanent basis.

Now, after eight years at Barcelona, the Uruguay international will continue his career with Liverpool.
