Mario Marinică, a seasoned Romanian coach with a rich international background, has taken the helm as the Liberian national team head coach, AfricaSoccer.com can confirm

Marinică, previously credited for guiding the Malawi national team to the Africa Cup of Nations final tournament in 2021, brings a wealth of experience.

Commencing his coaching journey in 1992 in England, he contributed to Arsenal’s academy during Arsene Wenger’s tenure and later held diverse roles in Romanian football.

His global coaching ventures included stints in Tanzania, Iraq, and India with teams like Azam FC, Zakho, and Kerala Blasters.

Liberia, currently ranked 154th in the FIFA rankings, faces the challenge of qualifying for the African Cup under Marinică’s guidance.

The team, historically one of Africa’s weakest, has participated only twice (1996 and 2002) in the competition.

Notably, Liberia’s roster features goalkeeper Boison Wynney from Ceahlăul Piatra Neamț in Romania.

Marinică’s appointment comes amid the departure of George Weah, the legendary AC Milan and Paris Saint-Germain striker, who served as Liberia’s president from 2018 to 2024.

Weah, the 1995 Ballon d’Or winner, lost the 2023 election for a new term.

Marinică faces the challenging mission of elevating Liberia’s football fortunes on the African stage.
