With the Algerian Cup final looming, USM Alger have turned to a familiar face in hopes of reclaiming domestic glory.
Former head coach Rolland Courbis has returned to Algiers ahead of the showdown against CR Belouizdad, offering both tactical insight and a touch of nostalgia as the Red and Black seek their first cup triumph since 2013.
Courbis, who famously led USMA to Algerian Cup success more than a decade ago, arrived in the capital on Tuesday at the invitation of the club’s hierarchy.
While officially billed as a guest of honour for Saturday’s final at Nelson Mandela Stadium, his presence carries far greater weight behind the scenes.
“Obviously, I would be happy to accompany them, but under no circumstances would I be on the bench,” Courbis explained on L’Équipe du Soir. With a wry smile, he added: “Out of superstition, as the last time they won the Algerian Cup, it was when we were together, so they may have thought that I could bring them luck. I hope they are right and that I will bring them luck.”
At 71, Courbis brings a wealth of experience, both from his earlier stint in Algeria and a storied career in French football.
Though he will not play a formal role on matchday, his advisory capacity could prove invaluable to current manager Mohamed Lacet and his technical staff.
Having studied recent encounters between USMA and CR Belouizdad, Courbis is expected to offer strategic suggestions and highlight minor tactical details that could tilt the balance in a tightly contested final.
“I’m going to give them two or three words and a few details that might be interesting during the week,” Courbis said, underlining the subtle nature of his contribution.
Beyond the pitch, his return also provides a psychological boost to a squad that has endured an uneven season.
The aura of a former cup-winning coach, familiar with the club’s culture and expectations, may provide a timely morale lift ahead of one of the most significant fixtures in USMA’s calendar.
As USM Alger prepare for the final, the influence of Rolland Courbis—quiet, advisory, but unmistakable—adds a compelling subplot.
Whether his presence will bring the same luck it did in 2013 remains to be seen, but for a club chasing redemption, every edge matters.
