Rodri joins Barcelona after Real Madrid interest as famous transfer trail grows
Rodri has chosen Barcelona despite holding talks with Real Madrid, becoming the latest high-profile player to favour the Catalan club over its long-standing rivals.
The Spain midfielder’s future had been the subject of weeks of speculation, with Real Madrid viewing him as an ideal solution to restore balance to their midfield. His ability to retain possession and dictate play was considered a strong fit for a side that already possesses considerable attacking talent.
However, after a prolonged period of uncertainty, Rodri opted to move to Camp Nou. His decision has added another prominent chapter to a transfer rivalry that has repeatedly seen players choose Barcelona after being linked with Real Madrid.
According to AS, the list includes several major names who were either considered by the club from the Santiago Bernabeu or strongly associated with a move there before eventually joining Barcelona.
Rivaldo and Ronaldinho
Before arriving at Barcelona, Rivaldo was one of the most exciting emerging talents in Spanish football during his time at Deportivo La Coruna. His performances attracted interest from Real Madrid, but Barcelona acted decisively to sign him in 1997.
The Brazilian went on to enjoy an exceptional career at Camp Nou. He became one of the best players in the world, won the Ballon d’Or and left a lasting mark on the club’s history.
Ronaldinho was another player pursued by both clubs. Following his departure from Paris Saint-Germain in the summer of 2003, the Brazilian was among the most sought-after players in Europe.
He chose Barcelona, a decision that had a major effect on the club’s future. Barcelona were experiencing a difficult period on and off the pitch, but Ronaldinho became the leading figure in their return to the top.
His arrival helped lay the foundations for the team that would later provide the platform for Lionel Messi’s emergence.
Seydou Keita attracted attention from several leading European clubs after impressing with Sevilla. His physical strength, work rate and versatility eventually led him to Barcelona in 2008, where he became one of the first important additions to Pep Guardiola’s project.
Eto’o, Alves and Villa
Samuel Eto’o’s story is particularly significant because the Cameroon striker began his career in Real Madrid’s academy. He did not receive enough opportunities with the first team, and after loan spells and a productive period at Mallorca, he developed into one of Europe’s leading forwards.
Barcelona signed Eto’o in 2004, giving him the ideal environment to fulfil his potential. He became one of the most influential strikers in the club’s history, in a move widely regarded as one of Real Madrid’s biggest missed opportunities.
Dani Alves later revealed that he had come very close to joining Real Madrid after establishing himself as one of the world’s best full-backs at Sevilla. The transfer did not happen, and he moved to Barcelona in 2008 instead.
The Brazilian enjoyed one of the most successful periods of his career at Camp Nou, winning multiple league titles and UEFA Champions League trophies. He also became one of the defining figures of Guardiola’s era. Alves subsequently acknowledged that his career might have followed a completely different path had he moved to the Santiago Bernabeu.
David Villa had been a long-term target for Real Madrid after becoming one of Europe’s most prolific strikers at Valencia. He was repeatedly linked with a move to the Santiago Bernabeu, but negotiations did not produce an agreement.
Barcelona completed his signing in 2010. Villa joined Guardiola’s team and became part of the group that won La Liga and the UEFA Champions League.
Suarez, Fabregas and Neymar
After an outstanding season with Liverpool, Luis Suarez was wanted by both Barcelona and Real Madrid. The Uruguay striker chose Barcelona in 2014, and the transfer quickly proved its value.
His family connections in Barcelona and his comfort with life in Catalonia helped him settle at the club. He later formed the celebrated “MSN” attacking trio with Lionel Messi and Neymar, becoming one of Barcelona’s leading scorers of the modern era.
Andre Gomes was also being considered by both clubs while he was at Valencia. Barcelona won the race in the summer of 2016, paying 35m euros plus add-ons.
At his presentation, Gomes explained that Barcelona’s football philosophy was more closely aligned with the way he understood the game, suggesting that sporting considerations were central to his decision.
Cesc Fabregas followed a different path. His preference was shaped by a clear desire to return to the club where he had developed as a player.
While he was starring for Arsenal, Real Madrid were among the clubs to examine the possibility of signing him. Fabregas, however, made no secret of the fact that Barcelona was his priority.
AS reported in 2010 that he had confirmed his wish to return to Camp Nou and believed it would be difficult to give up the opportunity. His move was completed a year later, when he returned to Barcelona after several impressive seasons in England.
The contest for Neymar was perhaps the fiercest transfer battle between the two clubs. Real Madrid made significant efforts to persuade the Brazilian to join them, but Neymar ultimately selected Barcelona in 2013.
AS reported at the time that Neymar had admired Lionel Messi and Barcelona’s style for years. His father also said his son had chosen the club he believed best suited his qualities and preferred way of playing.
Neymar’s arrival at Camp Nou was consequently regarded as one of Barcelona’s most significant victories over Real Madrid away from the pitch. Rodri’s decision now adds another major name to that long-running list.
