Manchester City midfielder Rodri has highlighted Lamine Yamal as one of the standout performers of the season while discussing potential Ballon d’Or contenders.
Speaking ahead of City’s crucial Group G clash against Juventus in the FIFA Club World Cup, the Spaniard praised the young winger’s contributions during a breakout year.
Yamal, who has Equatorial Guinean and Moroccan heritage, enjoyed a stellar campaign with Barcelona, becoming one of Europe’s most exciting young talents.
The 17-year-old’s consistent performances at both club and international level have sparked growing calls for his inclusion in this year’s Ballon d’Or conversation.
Rodri, who claimed the Ballon d’Or last season after guiding Manchester City to a historic treble, offered his perspective despite being ruled out of this year’s contention due to injury.
“I don’t know who will win, there are many options. I always praise Spanish players. I think Pedri had an incredible season, Lamine Yamal too. I don’t know, we’ll see what happens.”
Beyond the award discussion, Rodri addressed Manchester City’s path in the Club World Cup and issued a pointed warning about South American teams, particularly those from Brazil.
“Nobody wants to face the Brazilians. As Luis Enrique said, it’s no surprise. We know the strength of South America, especially Brazil. Brazilian teams are doing very well, they surprise not only with their performance but also with their results.”
He added, “You can see the pace — from our season’s end, but also the quality of their players is very high. We’re looking at the possibilities, and I think nobody wants to face the Brazilians because of the demands, all the supporters behind them.”
