Riyad Mahrez: “Our goal Is to make Algerians proud”
Riyad Mahrez says Algeria’s national team aim to make their people proud as they prepare to face Uganda in Tizi Ouzou on Tuesday.
Speaking to AL24 News on the eve of the match, the Fennecs captain reflected on his greatest memories, his deep love for the national team, and his hopes for the future.
Joined by Aïssa Mandi and Nabil Bentaleb on the television set, the Al-Ahli SC forward spoke with emotion about his finest moment in Algerian colours — the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations triumph in Egypt.
“It’s not difficult to choose my greatest victory with the Greens,” he said. “The 2019 AFCON win remains unforgettable.
It carried a special meaning because winning such a tournament away from home, and under a new 24-team format, was an incredible challenge.”
Mahrez praised the unity and determination that defined Algeria’s title-winning team.
He credited former coach Djamel Belmadi for shaping their success and instilling a winning mentality.
“This title came from an exceptional group led by a remarkable coach,” Mahrez said. “Belmadi united us around one goal and gave us the mindset needed to win.”
The captain also highlighted the crucial role of Algerian supporters, whose passion continues to inspire the players.
“The stadium fills three or four hours before kick-off,” he said. “When we arrive, we already feel the energy and want to start immediately.
The fans push us to give everything on the pitch. Their support drives us every time we play.”
Looking ahead, Mahrez expressed confidence in the team’s progress and ambition.
“Our main goal for the next World Cup is to make the Algerian people proud,” he said. “We have a strong team and an excellent coach.
We’ve worked together for two years, and our dream is to bring happiness to our supporters in the next AFCON.”
Mahrez’s words reflected both maturity and motivation. As captain, he continues to embody the dedication, pride, and determination that define the Fennecs.
His leadership has become a symbol of Algeria’s fighting spirit and their ongoing pursuit of excellence.
The match against Uganda offers another chance for Algeria to show their strength and unity under Mahrez’s guidance.
The 33-year-old winger, still driven by passion and national pride, remains focused on leading his team to new victories.
“Every time I wear this shirt, I think of the fans,” he said. “We play to make them proud, and that will never change.”
As Algeria step onto the pitch in Tizi Ouzou, Mahrez will once again lead with the same ambition and belief that inspired a generation in 2019 — to win, to unite, and to make a nation proud.
