Riyad Mahrez inspires Al Ahli to Asian Champions League quarter-finals with brace

Riyad Mahrez inspires Al Ahli to Asian Champions League quarter-finals with brace

Riyad Mahrez delivered a match-winning performance to fire Al Ahli into the Asian Champions League quarter-finals, scoring twice in a 2-0 victory over Al Rayyan.

The result, combined with a 3-1 first-leg win, sealed a 5-1 aggregate triumph for the Saudi club, ensuring their place in the next stage of the competition.

Mahrez delivers when it matters

The Algerian winger was at the heart of Al Ahli’s attacking play, orchestrating moves with four key passes and five shots on goal.

His breakthrough came in the 77th minute, receiving the ball inside the box with his back to goal before executing a composed turn and chipping it delicately past the goalkeeper.

Just six minutes later, Mahrez struck again. A swift attacking move saw Gabi Veiga set up the former Manchester City star, who finished clinically inside the area to double his tally for the night and seal Al Ahli’s progression.

With this brace, Mahrez has now recorded eight goals and seven assists in the competition, reinforcing his importance to Matías Almeyda’s squad as they chase continental glory.

Al Ahli cruise into quarter-finals

Having already won the first leg 3-1 in Qatar, Al Ahli approached the return match with confidence, controlling possession and limiting Al Rayyan’s attacking threats.

The Saudi side’s defensive discipline ensured their opponents struggled to break them down, while Mahrez’s individual brilliance in attack proved decisive.

The victory means Al Ahli remain on course for a deep run in the tournament, with their quarter-final opponents set to be determined in the upcoming draw.

Mahrez key to Al Ahli’s ambitions

Since joining Al Ahli from Manchester City, Mahrez has established himself as the team’s creative leader, combining vision, technical skill, and goal-scoring ability to great effect.

His influence in the Asian Champions League has been particularly significant, with his contributions proving vital in the knockout stages.

With Al Ahli now through to the last eight, the Saudi club will be looking to Mahrez to continue his fine form as they aim to challenge for the continental title.
