Riyad Mahrez in talks with Al Shabab as Saudi future comes into focus

Riyad Mahrez is edging closer to remaining in the Saudi Pro League, with Al Shabab in serious negotiations to sign the former Al Ahli winger before the summer transfer window closes.

The 35-year-old Algeria international had previously expressed a desire to return to European football after leaving Al Ahli, but the lack of strong offers could now persuade him to continue his career in Saudi Arabia.

Mahrez’s next destination has remained uncertain, although his social-media activity has added weight to speculation that he could be heading to the Saudi capital. The player has started following Al Shabab’s official Instagram account, prompting further suggestions that discussions could lead to a move.

According to Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, contact between Al Shabab and Mahrez is ongoing as the club attempts to reach an agreement before the transfer market shuts. The negotiations are understood to include the financial package that would be offered to the Algerian.

Reports indicate that Mahrez is seeking an annual salary of about $10m. Al Shabab, however, are attempting to reduce that figure as they work towards reaching a final agreement with the player.

Earlier reports from Asharq Al-Awsat revealed that Mahrez had been in talks with both Al Shabab and Al Ettifaq. The indications linking him with Al Shabab have since grown stronger, with the player’s latest social-media activity providing an additional signal about his possible future.

Mahrez had been hoping to secure a return to Europe following his departure from Al Ahli. However, with no serious proposals having emerged so far, staying in the Saudi league appears increasingly likely.

His time in Saudi Arabia has formed an important part of the later stages of his career. The former Manchester City player enjoyed notable success with Al Ahli, helping the club win the AFC Champions League Elite title on two successive occasions.

Mahrez also remains a prominent figure in Algeria’s national-team story. He ended his international career after Algeria’s campaign at the 2026 World Cup came to an end.

A move to Al Shabab would therefore keep Mahrez in the Saudi Pro League, despite his earlier intention to return to European competition. The negotiations are continuing, with the player’s wage demands and the club’s efforts to lower the financial terms still central to the discussions. No final agreement has yet been reached, but Al Shabab have emerged as the leading candidates to secure his signature.
