Riyad Mahrez has set his sights on another continental title—this time with Algeria—following his latest triumph with Al-Ahli in the Asian Champions League.
The 34-year-old winger played a pivotal role in his club’s 2-0 victory over Japan’s Kawasaki Frontale in the final, registering nine goals and eight assists throughout the tournament.
Yet, despite lifting another prestigious trophy, Mahrez’s focus swiftly returned to national duty.
“Each continental title has its own unique flavor. Whether it’s with Algeria (CAN 2019), Manchester City (Champions League 2023) or Al-Ahli (2024), it’s impossible to compare. Every experience is special,” Mahrez told reporters in the mixed zone after the final in Riyadh.
The former Manchester City star reflected emotionally on his relationship with Algeria and its supporters, expressing a lingering ambition to bring home more silverware in the green shirt.
“The Algerian public? They are mine. I know they always support me. Today, I still have work to do with Algeria. I want to win another trophy with the national team. The emotions in the national team are indescribable,” he said.
Mahrez’s remarks underline a continued commitment to the national side, despite suggestions in recent years that retirement from international football might be on the horizon.
A central figure in Algeria’s memorable 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) victory in Egypt, Mahrez has since experienced disappointment, with the 2021 and 2023 campaigns ending in early exits.
Now, as Algeria prepares for the 2025 AFCON in Morocco, the captain’s declaration serves as a rallying cry.
He appears determined to lead his nation to a second title under his watch, drawing inspiration from his past success and the unwavering support of the Algerian fanbase.
“I want to finish what I started with Algeria,” Mahrez stated, making clear that his ambitions are far from fulfilled.
At an age when many begin to consider winding down their careers, Mahrez remains a key figure for both club and country.
His performance on the continental stage this season has silenced critics and reinforced his enduring quality.
