Riyad Mahrez unlikely to return to Europe, set to continue with Al Ahli Saudi FC
Riyad Mahrez is expected to remain at Al Ahli Saudi FC, with rumours linking him to a return to European football widely dismissed as unlikely.
Reports recently suggested a potential move to Atalanta Bergamo in Italy’s Serie A, but the Algerian international appears more inclined to conclude his career in Saudi Arabia.
Mahrez, whose contract with Al Ahli runs until June 2027, has already reached the peak of his club career, having won every major trophy during his time at Manchester City between 2018 and 2023.
Under Pep Guardiola, Mahrez lifted the UEFA Champions League and secured multiple domestic titles. Following these successes, he opted for a high-profile move to Saudi Arabia, signing a lucrative deal reportedly worth €4 million per month.
“It’s clear that Mahrez isn’t seriously considering leaving Jeddah while his contract is still valid,” analysts note, as Atalanta would be unable to match his current salary.
His performances in the 2025–26 season have reinforced this decision, with Mahrez scoring seven goals and providing 13 assists in 32 appearances across all competitions.
Al Ahli is reportedly considering extending his contract beyond its current term. With the club sitting second in the Saudi Pro League and coming off an AFC Champions League triumph last season, a contract extension could secure Mahrez’s influence on the next generation of players.
Mahrez, who is the second most-capped player in Al Ahli’s history with 111 appearances, is also contemplating retirement from international football after the 2026 World Cup.
This reduces any incentive to seek a move that might jeopardise his national team eligibility.
Given his form, influence, and long-term plans, it seems increasingly certain that Mahrez will finish his career in Saudi Arabia rather than return to Europe.
