19-year-old Malian midfielder Mahamadou Doumbia is already leaving an indelible mark on the Jupiler League. Having found the back of the net in recent matches, the young talent aspires to follow in the footsteps of his football idol, the legendary Ivorian midfielder Yaya Gnégnéri Touré.
In an exclusive interview with Africafoot, Doumbia shared his optimism about his burgeoning career, expressing gratitude for the warm reception he’s received since joining Antwerp last summer from Nordsjaelland in Denmark.
When asked about his debut season, Doumbia said, “Things are off to a good start for me. After a few games with the reserves, I’m now establishing myself in the first team.
I’m very happy, and I hope to continue this good momentum.”
His ultimate goal is to secure a long-term position as a starter with Antwerp, acknowledging the challenges but remaining determined to work hard for a prominent role in the squad.
Reflecting on his decision to join Antwerp, Doumbia revealed that he had received interest from certain French clubs. However, the solid offer from Antwerp and their confidence in him influenced his choice to settle in Belgium, emphasizing the importance of playing time for his career progression.
Notably, Doumbia is one of the few players trained at the Jean-Marc Guillou academy to embark on his professional journey in Belgium. Drawing parallels with his idol Yaya Touré, who also plied his trade in the Jupiler League, Doumbia expressed admiration for Belgian football and its distinct characteristics.
“I know there is a big difference between Denmark and Belgium in terms of championship level. In addition, my idol Yaya Touré also played in the Belgian Jupiler League,” he remarked.
When questioned about his favorite championship and reference footballers, Doumbia professed a strong affinity for the English Premier League, citing its intensity, duels, and spectacle.
His two footballing idols, Yaya Touré and Kevin De Bruyne, have significantly influenced his appreciation for the renowned league.
As Doumbia’s performances continue to garner attention, including the possibility of representing Mali in the upcoming Olympic Games Paris 2024 with the U23 team, he remains focused on his ambitions.
“My goal is the Mali National A Team,” he asserted, demonstrating a commitment to progressing in his young career as a professional footballer.
