Rigobert Song signals readiness for potential return as Cameroon coach

Rigobert Song has expressed his willingness to return to the Cameroon national team should the country call on him again.

The former Indomitable Lions captain, who coached the team between 2022 and 2024, shared his position in an interview that reignited debate over the long-term future of the national side’s technical leadership.

Asked directly about the prospect of taking charge again, Song offered a clear and confident response.

He described his dedication to Cameroon as unwavering and insisted he would always answer the country’s call.

“I’m a football fanatic and a Cameroonian patriot, and I show that every time in my own way. Wherever Cameroon needs me, I will always be there,” he said.

“It was my first time managing that kind of situation as national coach. We learn every day. But with everything Cameroon has given me, I have a duty to give back. I will always be present when needed.”

His statement resonates strongly at a time when questions regarding the succession of current coach Marc Brys continue to stir tension behind the scenes.

The instability surrounding the position has become a recurring theme in Cameroonian football.

Song’s exit after the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations left lingering questions. Fecafoot chose not to renew his contract after the team fell in the round of 16 and amid controversy involving goalkeeper André Onana.

Months later, confusion deepened when he was unexpectedly announced as head coach of the Central African Republic by the country’s sports ministry—an appointment immediately rejected by the nation’s football federation.

The episode created uncertainty around his next steps and has never been fully clarified.

His latest message arrives at a delicate moment for Cameroonian football. Only weeks before AFCON 2025, Fecafoot president Samuel Eto’o dismissed Marc Brys and appointed David Pagou—an inexperienced figure at international level—as interim coach. The future beyond the tournament remains unclear.

In this volatile environment, Song’s voice carries significant weight.

His leadership history, close relationship with Eto’o, and deep understanding of the national team’s culture make him a natural reference point whenever the coaching role becomes unsettled.

His recent remarks may strengthen the perception that he remains a viable—and willing—option for the future.
