Richards Bay has officially welcomed experienced striker Mxolisi Macuphu and announced Papi Zothwane as the club’s new co-coach. Co-coach Ronnie Gabriel shared the developments during a press conference in Durban ahead of their Nedbank Cup clash.
Macuphu’s Move from Royal AM
Macuphu, who previously played for Royal AM, left the club following a turbulent period caused by salary disputes.
The financial difficulties arose when the South African Revenue Service seized the club’s assets, leading to a postponement of their league fixture against Chippa United.
Although the club, led by chairwoman Shauwn “MaMkhize” Mkhize, eventually resolved the salary issues, the instability provided Macuphu with the opportunity to terminate his contract.
Since joining Royal AM from TS Galaxy in the 2021/22 season, the 33-year-old striker has made 66 appearances and netted nine goals.
Now at Richards Bay, Macuphu is eager to bring his experience to the KwaZulu-Natal outfit as they navigate the remainder of the season.
Zothwane Joins Coaching Staff
Adding to the club’s preparations, Richards Bay has also recruited Papi Zothwane as co-coach. Zothwane, who previously managed Magesi FC, joins the technical team to work alongside Ronnie Gabriel.
His arrival was first reported by Sportswire and signals Richards Bay’s intent to strengthen their tactical approach as they face high-profile challenges.
Focus on the Nedbank Cup
Richards Bay’s immediate test comes in the form of a Nedbank Cup Last 32 tie against Orlando Pirates.
The match, set to take place at King Zwelithini Stadium on Sunday at 3 pm, presents an opportunity for the team to showcase their new signings and coaching strategies.
With Macuphu adding firepower upfront and Zothwane bringing fresh insights to the coaching bench, Richards Bay aims to build momentum in both league and cup competitions.
These moves underline the club’s commitment to growth and resilience in South African football.
