Rennes and Borussia Dortmund lead European transfer battle for Nigeria star Emmanuel Fernandez

French side Stade Rennais FC have intensified their search for defensive reinforcements, identifying Nigeria international Emmanuel Fernandez as a key summer target in an increasingly competitive transfer market.

The 24-year-old centre-back has attracted widespread attention across Europe after a standout campaign with Rangers FC, where he quickly established himself as one of the most reliable defenders in the Scottish Premiership following his move from Peterborough United.

His rapid rise has now placed him firmly on Rennes’ radar, with the Ligue 1 club believed to be assessing multiple options as they look to strengthen their backline ahead of the new season.

Breakout season puts Fernandez in demand

Fernandez’s debut season in Scotland was marked by consistency, leadership, and an unexpected goal threat. He registered five goals in 27 league appearances, a return that underlined his influence at both ends of the pitch.

His performances earned him Rangers’ Player of the Season award, a recognition that reflected both his defensive stability and his growing importance within the squad. International recognition followed soon after, with the defender collecting three caps for Nigeria national football team.

Rangers are now expected to demand a significant profit if they sanction a sale, having only signed him from Peterborough for around £3.5 million last year.

European competition heats up for signature

According to reports from French outlet Ouest-France, Fernandez is one of three central defenders currently being tracked by Rennes as part of their recruitment planning.

However, the Ligue 1 side are far from alone in their interest. Dutch giants Feyenoord, Bundesliga side Bayer 04 Leverkusen, and European heavyweights Borussia Dortmund are also monitoring the situation closely.

Dortmund’s involvement in particular adds significant weight to the transfer battle, given their reputation for developing young defensive talent and providing a platform for rapid progression into elite European competition.

Rangers set for major decision amid rising value

At Ibrox, Fernandez’s future has become a subject of growing interest as Rangers weigh up both sporting and financial considerations. His breakout year has not only strengthened their defensive unit but also positioned him as one of the club’s most valuable assets.

With multiple European clubs circling, Rangers face a critical decision in the weeks ahead: retain a key performer for their own ambitions or capitalise on his rising market value while demand is at its peak.
