Renaldo Leaner: Sekhukhune goalkeeper linked with Orlando Pirates move in South Africa transfer rumours

Orlando Pirates are weighing up a move for Sekhukhune United goalkeeper Renaldo Leaner in a deal that could see the 28-year-old become a free agent before switching clubs.

The Soweto giants have been linked with Leaner as they assess their long-term options in goal, with the former Ajax Cape Town prospect currently valued at €250,000 and entering an uncertain phase of his Sekhukhune spell. No contract expiry date has been disclosed, fuelling suggestions the South African could be allowed to run down his deal and leave on a free, with the probability of a transfer on Transfermarkt listed only as “?”.

Leaner, born in Cape Town on 12 February 1998 and standing at 1.87m, has risen steadily through domestic football since emerging from the Ajax Cape Town youth ranks. He moved into the senior Ajax side in 2020 before spells at Cape Town Spurs and Durban City, earning a switch to Sekhukhune United in July 2023. All of his club career to date has been spent in South Africa’s top structures, including the Betway Premiership.

His market value has climbed sharply in recent seasons, jumping from €25,000 at Durban City in early 2022 to a peak of €300,000 with Sekhukhune by June 2024, before stabilising at €250,000 through 2025 and into early 2026. That figure is viewed as modest for a goalkeeper in his prime years and adds to the sense that Pirates could see him as a cost‑effective option, particularly if he is out of contract.

The right-footed stopper, who wears number 16 at Sekhukhune, is yet to see his future resolved publicly, but a move to Orlando Pirates would represent the biggest step of his career to date and could define his standing in the Premiership if the transfer materialises.
